On Wednesday, March 19, as the disastrous Iraq war entered its 6th year, 300 St. Louisans took a stand for peace and against the corruption which is fed by the war machine and feeds it.
Lining the sidewalks of Clayton from the office of Senator Kit Bond to the offices of Boeing military subcontractor Sabreliner for two hours, we held signs showing the money cycle, and signs demanding the obvious: "Instead Of War, Invest in People."
Why Boeing? Why Bond?
Boeing and other military contractors have provided Sen. Bond with over $500,000 since 1989. Sen. Bond and other St. Louis area members of Congress voted for billions for Boeing, and hundreds of billions for the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

170 St. Louisans ride Peace Train to Chicago Mobilization
They had been up since 4 or 5 am, but as our stalwart contingent stumbled off the Chicago Peace Train 20 hours later, their eyes shone with the inspiration of having been part of a 10 thousand-strong rainbow-hued wave for peace. It was particularly satisfying that so many young adults traveled from St. Louis to Chicago to speak up for a more peaceful and just world. Altogether, there were actions in 11 U.S. cities on Saturday, October 27. For photos and news reports, click here. And be sure to read Sylvester Brown's Tuesday and Thursday columns about his experience on the peace train.

Iraq Veterans and Military Families Lead March to the Arch

On Sunday, August 19, concluding the Veterans For Peace (VFP) National Convention, hundreds of veterans, military families, and supporters, led by Iraq Veterans Against the War, marched to the Arch to say:
Funding the War is Killing Our Troops!
On Friday, Dr. John Johnson spoke at a VFP press conference (video here) about the death in Iraq of his daughter, Lavena Johnson, and the Army's coverup of the circumstances of her death. That evening, the VFP Public Speakout was addressed by Iraq war veterans, more Gold Star parents, military families, a Mideast policy expert, and a Presidential candidate.
The convention brought together 90 Iraq war Veterans, 40 Iraq war military families, 7 Iraq war Gold Star family members, and hundreds of veterans of previous wars.

Our dear friend Eldora Spiegelberg died on Wednesday, August 22.
Born and raised in Bulgaria, Eldora was a retired child psychologist, and a long-time activist for peace and justice in St. Louis, as a member of the St. Louis Friends (Quaker) Meeting, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the St. Louis Peace Information Center which she founded in 1967, and many more. She led a sucessful effort to retain an American Friends Service Committee office in St. Louis in 1980, after its regional office decided to close it. She then served AFSC as committee person and part-time volunteer staff for over 15 years.
She was the founder and coordinator of the annual observance of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and of the annual Human Rights day Black Sash vigil which remembers murdered civil rights workers. She regularly visited prisoners and read with young students at school. In 1981 Eldora received the Ethical Humanist of the Year award from the Ethical Society of St. Louis. The award recognizes "individuals or groups who have provided courageious and dedicated service to maintaining the rights and dignity of their fellow human beings in some aspect of life."
